#HearingFactFriday: More people should take advantage of hearing aids

We’ve written plenty about the prevalence of hearing loss — particularly how the number of people with hearing loss grows as we age. A study published in last year’s JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery journal confirms it, noting nearly all study participants 80 and older had hearing loss.

But another fact in the study caught our attention – and led to today’s infographic. Despite nearly 100 percent of the participants having hearing loss, only 59 percent wear hearing aids.

Dr. Anil Lalwani, team leader of the study from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, noted the discrepancy, saying “Hearing aids are underutilized in this population, despite the fact that hearing aid use has been shown to improve the social, functional and emotional effects of hearing loss.”
