#HearingFactFriday: Hearing health and heart health are linked

Key to good hearing is having a healthy auditory system. And key to a healthy auditory system is sufficient blood flow to its critical parts, particularly the cochlea.

So it wasn’t surprising when a 2010 Wichita State University study found that “impaired cardiovascular health” negatively influenced hearing health — and that a healthy cardiovascular system is good for our auditory system.

More surprising is a 2009 study that found “significant association” between low-frequency hearing loss and cardiovascular disease and risk factors. The study suggested that low-frequency hearing loss can “predict the presence or potential development of cardiovascular disease,” and that people with low-frequency hearing loss “should be regarded at risk for cardiovascular events.”

So if you have low-frequency hearing loss, let your doctor know, so they can assess you for potential heart-related risks.
