Communication strategies

Learn why good communication goes beyond just hearing with your ears.

Your hearing aids will absolutely amplify words and help make conversations more audible. But using all the information given to you, when possible, helps create an environment for more successful communication.

  • Positioning — Position yourself towards the conversation with your back to the room, to reduce sound from behind you.
  • Lighting — Having sunlight or light behind you makes it easier to see the face and expressions of the person you are communicating with.
  • Sight — Simply seeing facial expressions or hand gestures can add to or augment communication.
  • Pace — Understanding is always improved when the pace of speech is slower with more enunciation. Louder is rarely the key, especially with new hearing devices.
